Still hot, but temps to drop 20 degrees by Friday

Temperatures and humidity will begin to fall Thursday as a cold front passes through the area today.

With the exception of northern Fairfield County and Litchfield County, Heat Advisory is in effect to 8 p.m. Thursday. The heat index for Thursday is 96 degrees in Bridgeport, 95 in New Haven, 92 in Danbury and 90 in Torrington.

The National Weather Service’s hourly forecast projects temperatures to peak at 89 degrees in mid-afternoon and continue to decrease overnight into Friday morning. By 5 a.m Friday, the temperature will be 66 degrees - a more than 20-degree drop from Thursday’s high temperature.

On Friday, high temperatures will be in the mid-70s with lower humidity.

On Wednesday, the high temperature was 95 at Bradley International Airport in Windsor Locks; 94 at Sikorsky Memorial Airport in Stratford, a new record; 93 at Tweed-New Haven Airport. another record,;91 in Danbury, Oxford. Meriden and White Plains airports, all new records; and 86 at Groton airport.

The 90-degree heat pumped up August’s average temperature 4.4 degrees above normal at Sikorsky and Danbury airports. New Haven’s average August temperature of 77.1 degrees is 4 degrees higher than normal.
