Now that every New Canaan spring team has been knocked from its respective FCIAC tournament this season, it's time to look ahead to state tournament play. Following the release of both the baseball and softball bracekts this morning, all Connecticut High School postseason schedules have been disclosed. Here's where the Rams are headed:
Leading off, No. 9 New Canaan basseball (14-6) will open its quest to repeat as Class L state champions Monday at home against No. 24 Wethersfield (10-10). First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. at Mead Park. Should the Rams advance, they would either travel to No. 8 Cheney Tech or host No. 25 Fitch on Tuesday afternoon.
One half-hour after New Canaan baseball starts its state tournament journey, No. 21 Rams softball (11-9) will open its own at No. 12 Stamford at 4 p.m. New Canaan fell to the Black Knights 4-1 two weeks ago in the only meeting between the two teams this season. If the Rams upset Stamford (14-6), they would either visit No. 5 Daniel Hand or host No. 28 Staples the following day.
Over on the lacrosse field, Rams boys lacrosse will look to bounce back from a disappointing finish in the FCIAC semifinals with a first-round win against RHAM or Rockville Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. Barring a massive upset, third-seeded New Canaan (13-3) would remain at home for a second-round matchup agaisnt No. 6 Foran or No. 11 New Fairfield Saturday afternoon.
In the Class M bracket, No. 5 New Canaan girls lacrosse (11-4) will battle No. 12 Branford (8-7-1) Tuesday at 5 p.m. The Rams ended their regular season on a five-game win streak, before falling decidedly to Wilton in the FCIAC semifinals. If New Canaan is able to best Branford and top either No. 4 Daniel Hand or the winner of No. 13 Mercy and No. 20 Fitch's play-in game, it could see the Warriors again in the state final.
Slotted as the No. 20 seed in this year's tournament, Rams girls tennis (9-7) will begin with a play-in match agianst No. 13 Cheshire (11-4) Saturday at 10 a.m. The winner will earn the right to travel to No. 5 Daniel Hand Monday at 3 p.m.
New Canaan boys tennis has yet to receive its opening-round draw, but will likely open state tournament play Saturday as well.
For the Rams boys and girls outdoor track athletes who qualified, this year's State Open meet will be held at Middletown High School on June 9. Similarly, qualified New Canaan boys golfers must await state tournament play on June 11 at Fairview Farms golf course in Harwinton, Conn.
Lastly, Rams boys volleyball (11-5), which earned a berth in this year's FCIAC semifinals, will battle No. 11 Enfield (10-10) at home on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
