Two workshops to tackle energy, greener living

In observance of Earth Day, the New Canaan Conservation Commission is sponsoring two workshops.

"Is Solar Right for You? (And If Not, What Is?)" will be addressed Tuesday, April 22, at 7 p.m. at the New Canaan Nature Center.

Panelists, who are local professionals and business people, will discuss alternative energy sources, applications, funding and installation. Their firsthand experience will serve as a guide to those who are considering cleaner, cost-saving energy alternatives for homes and businesses.

The panelists are Mark Robbins, real estate and energy consultant with Clean Energy Finance & Investment Authority and consulting partner with C-PACE, Commercial Property Assessed Clean Energy; Leo Karl, of Karl Chevrolet; and Heather Lauver, president of HealthSpec LLC, a health and environmental advisory firm, and a certified energy auditor for the state of Connecticut.

"The Healthy Home: Living Greener and More Safely at Home" will be addressed Friday, April 25, at 9:15 a.m. at the nature center.

The discussion will take a closer look at home pollutants and green home retrofitting, provide practical tips for cleaning and greening the home and explain how to get the greatest cost savings from energy audits and alternative energy installations.

Lauver, who has a master's degree in public health from Yale University, is the guest speaker.

The Conservation Commission also publishes a biannual electronic newsletter, which can be found by visiting www.newcanaan.info.
