Trumbull firefighters save man from his wedding ring

TRUMBULL —In the course of duty Trumbull firefighters have freed people from crashed cars and burning buildings, but Thursday marked the first time officials have rescued a man from his own wedding band.

On Thursday afternoon, an employee from a local business came in to the Trumbull Fire Department’s Center Station to ask firefighters to help him cut his wedding ring off his finger.

The man explained that he had broken his finger and had it re-set and splinted at a doctor’s office, however the swelling had trapped the ring on his finger. After a few days, the ring had cut off circulation to his finger, causing it to turn blue and purple.

“The gentleman reported being married for 30 years, but said his wife agreed the ring needed to be cut off,” fire officials said in a release on their Facebook page.

The department’s rescue unit used its newly developed “man vs. machine” equipment to remove the ring from the man’s finger without any incident.

“Upon the successful cutting of the ring, the gentleman reported immediate relief of the pain he was feeling. The man thanked the crews for their help before continuing on with his day,” the release said.
