Town Council confirms new BOF member

The New Canaan Town Council has confirmed a new Board of Finance alternate member.

Thomas Schulte, a lawyer with Clifford Chance, was confirmed Jan. 29 to replace Colleen Baldwin, who became a regular Board of Finance member in December.

Selectman Nick Williams, a colleague of Schulte at the law firm, introduced the new member to the Town Council.

"I've had the pleasure of knowing Tom for the better part of a decade," Williams said. "He's an extremely dedicated, talented and eminently reasonable individual. I believe he'll be an outstanding addition to our board of finance."

Schulte has been a partner at Clifford Chance in New York since 1997, where he's the head of the firm's banking and financial division. Since 2007, Schulte has also been the chairman of the firm's global audit committee.

Schulte said his 25-year experience as a lawyer would be valuable to the Board of Finance.

"As a lawyer, you bring an attention to detail. You bring respect for procedures, for formalities, regulations," Schulte said. "You bring a deep appreciation for context."

He noted that those skills are "some pretty weighty issues the Board of Finance deals with on a daily basis."

Schulte has represented borrowers and lenders in all aspects of financings, restructuring and recapitalizations. He has written many articles and lectured on issues of banking, finance and law firm management.

He has a bachelor's degree in economics from Boston College and a juris doctor degree from Boston University School of Law.

Schulte and his wife moved to New Canaan in 1995. They have two children.
