Only eight players remain after two rounds of match play in the 77th Connecticut Junior Amateur at Watertown Golf Club.
Tuesday’s action featured the Round of 32 and Round of 16 and Wednesday the quarterfinals and semifinals will be played. In one quarterfinal-round matchup, Thomas VanBelle, a 2018 Brunswick School graduate, will play Connor Belcastro, a rising Brunswick senior.
VanBelle, representing Country Club of Darien, advanced by defeating top-seeded Ben James of Great River Golf Club in 19 holes in the Round of 16. Seeded 17th, VanBelle also had a long first-round match, as he edged Patrick Louzen of Silver Spring Club in 20 holes.
The ninth-seeded Belcastro edged Colin Cusa of Longshore Club in 19 holes in the first round, then defeated Brunswick teammate Matt Camel 3 and 1 in the Round of 16. Camel was victorious against Christopher Fosdick on the 19th hole in the opening round.
Darien teammates Alexander Gu and Jack Maguire will play each other in another quarterfinal match. The fourth-seeded Gu beat Kyle Camello (Twins Hills Country Club) 5 and 3 in the first round, then posted a 1-up win against Raymond Gresalfi (Candlewood Lake Club) in the Round of 16.
Maguire was a 2-up winner against Max Chubet (Wethersfield Country Club), before edging Jackson Roman (Shuttle Meadow Country Club) on the 19th hole in the Round of 16.
Greenwich High School rising senior Billy Nail will face Justin Mathew in the quarterfinals. Nail, representing The Millbrook Club, topped Calvin Smith (Wee Burn Club) 1-up, in the opening round. He then defeated Greenwich’s Tyler Donnellan (Greenwich Country Club) in the second round, 1-up.
Donnellan was a 5 and 4 winner over second-seeded Jack Woods (Ridgewood Country Club) in the first round.
Wednesday’s fourth quarterfinal-round match has Matt Doyle of Madison Country Club playing Bryan McLennan of Suffield Country Club.
