On the market: Convenient to everything

While the new house at 126 Woodland Road in New Canaan is a simple design, once inside, this spacious dwelling has much more warmth and pretty touches than one might have expected.

Woodland Road runs between Main Street and Route 124 and is convenient to everything.

The front stairs are large pieces of stone that lead up to the left and a simple entrance. The front hall is wide and the archways carry off in different directions. To the left, a kind of double living room has great southern exposure. The oak floor is dark and gives a great balance to the white interior, which combines curved molding along the ceilings. There's a fireplace that's set between two sash windows, making it a somewhat unique attraction when not in use.

The other room could work as a formal dining room space, or as an extension of the living area. There is another trio of sash windows, and they, too, have a long, low inviting window seat running below them.

The kitchen is immense, with a wood-topped island. The counters are white marble and the cabinetry a simple choice of slim silver-handled drawers and doors on white. The Viking stove has six gas burners, and there's a steel-faced subzero as well, along with a roomy separate pantry in the cooking area.

Off the back, between the garage entrance and the kitchen, is a laundry area combined with a mud room that also features a sink and matching cabinets.

The far side of the kitchen has a fireplace and big windows looking out on a small backyard with a section of slate patio. There's also a door leading outside.

French doors on the west side of the kitchen lead into a sun room with a high ceiling, though the western view is somewhat stilted by the proximity of a wall.

Wainscoting goes up the stairs to a large hall area.

To the left is one bedroom with the favored southern view out onto the neighborhood. It shares a Jack and Jill bathroom with another bedroom on the northeast side, with a view out in that direction. The ceilings are high upstairs and the floors are wood.

Farther back, the master bedroom suite features two large walk-in closets. The bedroom has the same molding on the ceiling, along with its own alarm center. The bathroom is plush with polished white marble and lots of room. There are two separate sinks, as well as a tub and shower with a built-in seat, which is half encased in glass.

Two other upstairs bedrooms are en suite -- one featuring a shower and the other a tub.

There's a third story as well, with lots of skylights and rambling space for a game or TV room, or perhaps an office. A commanding view from this floor looks far out to the east.
