NEW CANAAN — Both the creative and historic aspects of belly dancing were explored Sunday afternoon when the New Canaan Historical Society hosted “The Art of Belly Dancing with Tava,” which included a lesson and performance.

“Every culture has its own unique spin on this,” said Tava Naiyin of Norwalk, who’s been teaching and performing for over 18 years.

“It’s available to every body type, which I think is pretty unique as far as dance forms go,” she said, as well as open to any age or gender.

“It’s just something fun to do,” she said, “to learn a new way to move.”

Nancy Geary, director, said the event was organized in tandem with the society’s current show “Orientalism in American Art and the Silvermine Colony,” which runs through March 31.
