NEW CANAAN — A young woman who turned a school assignment into a campaign to help others took it to the next level Saturday morning when her nonprofit group Save God’s Kids held its first walkathon event.

Founder and Executive Director Nancy Leville, 20, who originally did a research paper on food deserts while at New Canaan High School two years ago, was thrilled to have around 150 people attend the Walk the Walk-A-Thon fundraiser and awareness event held at St. Aloysius Church.

“Around Christmas we’re going to have a big food packing event too,” said Leville, who got help organizing the one-mile walkathon from student Kiera Russo, who works with the Carver Club at the high school.
