Kockenmeister powers Greenwich girls to needed win

Trailing New Canaan by two points after the first quarter of Wednesday night’s game, the Greenwich High School girls basketball team gained the momentum in the second quarter, limiting the Rams to just one point.

Leading by seven points at halftime, the Cardinals added onto their advantage with a 20-point third quarter and posted a 46-33 road win over the Rams in an FCIAC matchup.

Senior guard Kim Kockenmeister powered Greenwich, scoring a game-high 21 points. The Cardnals upped their mark to 2-3 with the much-needed win.

“I’m very pleased with our effort,” GHS coach Chrys Hernandez said. “We came into the game with a lot of intensity and high energy. That intensity increased throughout the game, which was great to see.”

Kockenmeister, one of the Cardinals’ captains, made two 3-pointers and shot 4 for 4 from the foul line. Senior forward Beth Williamson added six points, including two 3-pointers, while junior forward Taylor Stamos had six points for the Cardinals.

Senior forward Tess Lamhaouar and junior guard Michelle Morganti, one of the team’s captains, contributed four points apiece for the victors.

“Our defense was amazing,” Hernandez said. “Our defensive intensity is what opened up the game for us. We pressured the ball and created turnovers.”

Leigh Charlton scored 12 points to pace New Canaan (2-2). Caity Blair had seven points for the Rams. Greenwich outscored New Canaan, 10-1, in the second quarter and 20-8 in the third to take a 37-18 lead.

Greenwich visits Brien McMahon in Norwalk on Friday at 6:30 p.m.

“It’s going to be a tough game, we know every game is going to be a battle for us,” Hernandez said. “One of the keys for us is to not fold under pressure or adversity.”
