Straight No Chaser, Pentatonix invade Mohegan Sun Arena for 3 days of vocal treasures

Not a lot of musical instruments behind the Dec. 7-9 weekend at Mohegan Sun Arena, but the result should still be splendid.

That’s because top a cappella groups Straight No Chaser and Pentatonix will be commanding the arena stage from Friday through Sunday nights. We’ve seen both, and while Pentatonix has really come on strongly in recent years, Straight No Chaser puts on a very satisfying show as well, especially during the holidays. (They first caught on with their loopy 1998 version of “12 Days of Christmas” posted on YouTube. A PBS special followed.)

The boys from Indiana University still get it done. As with Pentatonix, the musical instruments are each member’s vocal chords.

Pentatonix, with the only female member, is very close to selling out both shows at the arena (availability from aftermarket sellers, but you’ll pay for the privilege).

The three-time Grammy Award-winning group has sold nearly 10 million albums worldwide; their YouTube channel boasts more than 15.5 million subscribers, yielding over 3.4 billion video views. Crazy numbers.

As for holiday fare, their tracks, “Mary, Did You Know?” and “Hallelujah” were certified platinum and the group has had two holiday specials on NBC. This year, Pentatonix released the first collection in the group’s PTX Presents series, “Top Pop Vol. 1,” which features 11group-curated modern pop performances, and they wrapped a 39-city North American tour in September.

Mohegan Sun Arena, 1 Mohegan Sun Blvd., Uncasville. Straight No Chaser, Friday, Dec. 7, 8 p.m. some $30 tickets available; Pentatonix Saturday-Sunday, Dec. 8-9, 7 p.m.; aftermarket seats only. 888-226-7711 MoheganSun.com
