"On Canvas, Paper & Board -- Works by the Silvermine Group of Artists" continues through Aug. 5 in the Silvermine Room of the New Canaan Historical Society.

This is the latest in a series of exhibits that explore the Silvermine Art Colony, known locally as the Silvermine Group of Artists, or "The Knockers."

The exhibition focuses on the work of Edmund M. Ashe, Solon Borglum, Helen Hamilton, Addison T. Millar, Charles Reiffel, Carl Schmitt and Frederick Yohn. It seeks to highlight the different mediums in which the Silvermine Group of Artists worked. As professional artists, most were highly trained draftsmen capable of creating paintings in oil, watercolor, pastels, pencil, charcoal, pen and ink, printmaking and sculpture.

The works in the exhibit are grouped by artist, giving the opportunity for the viewer to compare and contrast within one artist's work the similarities and differences that are imposed by the different mediums and the intended purpose of the art. The layout of the exhibition also encourages one to look at the work, style and technique of each of the seven artists in comparison to each other.

The society, 13 Oenoke Ridge, is open Tuesday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. For information, call 203-966-1776 or visit www.nchistory.org.
