The Silvermine School of Art's faculty members will participate in an exhibition of their work from Aug. 21 to Sept. 11 at Sara Victoria Hall, 1037 Silvermine Road, New Canaan.
The school, which is celebrating its 90th birthday, has a faculty of notable artists, many of whom are Silvermine Guild of Artists members, who teach a wide range of disciplines and media from painting and drawing to metalwork.
An opening reception for the faculty exhibition takes place at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 21.
"Being part of a class, as opposed to working at home in isolation gives you the added bonus of seeing the work of others, thus rapidly increasing your exposure to ideas, techniques and working habits," faculty member Derek Leka said.
Leka teaches perspective drawing and acrylic painting, and the color workshop.
For Tom Brenner, who teaches drawing and painting, "too many students dwell on what is wrong in a piece of art, without acknowledging the richness and beauty it possesses, focusing on what they still cannot achieve, rather than appreciating the progress they have made. While it is essential to recognize one's shortcomings and to strive to improve, if an artist is unaware of his or her strengths, it becomes that much more difficult to build upon them."
The Silvermine School of Art offers students and working artists courses and workshops in traditional and nontraditional media. The school also offers one-day workshops and evening mini-sessions for those who would like to try a Silvermine course for the first time or explore a new discipline or medium.
Some of the new classes include an anatomy and figure drawing class in which artists learn the structure of the body; a botanical drawing class; and an advanced stained-glass course, which involves making the glass and painting onto it with enamels. One-day courses will be offered in pottery, metal sculpture, felting, and precious metal clay jewelry. In the precious metal clay workshop, students create their own crafted metal piece.
To coincide with the faculty exhibition, the Silvermine Arts Center will host an open house from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 7. Visitors can tour the campus and studios, meet with faculty, see demonstrations, participate in hands-on activities and register for courses and workshops.
The gallery is open Wednesday through Saturday from noon to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m.
