SCORE series to aid in starting new businesses

SCORE of Fairfield County will present a free, informational five-part series, "Simple Steps for Starting Your Own Business," at the New Canaan Library, 151 Main St.

Session one will take place Tuesday, Feb. 11, in the Adrian Lamb Room. The evening will begin with light refreshments at 5:30 p.m., followed by the presentation at 6.

The first session will cover what is involved in starting a small business -- the challenges, the opportunities and the requirements. It is meant to help people decide whether they really want to start their own business.

The remaining four sessions will focus on the key fundamentals of running a business, including marketing strategy, financial planning and funding. Participants will also have the opportunity to meet with and ask questions of successful entrepreneurs.

The workshop series will help those thinking of starting their own business to define and evaluate their ideas; establish a marketing strategy; develop a financial plan; identify the best ways to fund a startup; turn ideas into action with tools and templates; get useful and helpful mentoring sessions with a SCORE counselor and connect with other entrepreneurs.

Sessions two through five will take place:

Tuesday, Feb. 11: entrepreneur self-assessment, business plan;

Tuesday, Feb. 18: marketing strategy;

Tuesday, Feb. 25: marketing implementation;

Tuesday, March 4: financial planning and reporting;

Thursday, March 13: funding sources, conversations with entrepreneurs.
