The house at 1083 Smith Ridge Road in New Canaan is a colossal building with a striking edifice. It's a ways up Route 123 from downtown, but it's a direct jaunt and worth the drive.
Along a stone wall, there are two electronic gates on the property, providing safety and a sense of privacy from the main road. The driveway ambles around a front circular turnaround and has direct access to an attached three-car garage on the north side of the house.
The entrance is across a wide, blue slate porch, decorated by Doric columns and a slat ceiling that has a vintage look.
In the entryway is a parquet floor, banded by different shades of hardwood. A grand staircase ascends around an enormous lantern-like chandelier, while the bannister rolls up along a rise of wainscoting.
An archway to the right reveals an attractive living room. The ceiling, as it is throughout the downstairs, is high. The recessed white marble fireplace with its brick interior is a great complement to the cherry wood floor, built-in arches bookcases and tapered molding. Low sash windows mingle with the porch on the west side, while a view to the south shows the fenced-in pool, a fair-sized yard and private woods beyond that.

A double archway forms a vestibule, which leads out of this room into a gorgeous combination den and office space. The office, on the south side, is an enormous semi-circle surrounded by 7-foot-high windows, giving an expansive view and collecting a wealth of southern sunlight. The adjacent door has its own fireplace and French doors leading onto a large back patio. The room is filled with fine wooden walls and trim, and features several built-in shelves, as well as a recessed dry bar.
Glass doors lead out to the family room, which is centered on a stone fireplace and offers a great view out to the expansive backyard and adjacent woods through bay windows.
From here, a wide open arch leads into a dining area overlooking the back patio, which can be accessed by French doors. The adjacent kitchen has white cabinets blended with polished dark green stone on the counters and an island. There's a six-burner Wolf stove here as well, along with two sub-zeros and various accoutrements.
A formal dining room circles back off the kitchen -- separated by a butler's pantry with a sink. The dining room, which is paneled with wainscoting and an ornate crystal chandelier, also has its own fireplace.
Upstairs, the rooms seem to go on forever. There are four regular bedrooms on the second floor. Each is en suite and roomy, with built-in storage shelves and lots of bright windows.
At the top of the main stairs is an elaborate master suite with a grand walk-in closet that's the size of a bedroom in itself, done in wood. The bedroom has a fireplace, along with a balcony looking out onto the backyard.
The luxurious bathroom has a separate shower and spa tub and double sinks -- all designed with Italian stone tile and blocks of unpolished marble.Read Full Article
The space continues into the finished basement, where a gym room is equipped with a wall of mirrors and rubber flooring.
Along with several massive unfinished storage rooms, there is also a screening room and a sitting room that leads out to the pool. There is a bathroom and shower there as well.
