The house at 231 Frog Town Road in New Canaan provides a commanding view of its surroundings as the driveway climbs up to a beautiful plot.
Around the house is a wealth of trees and forsythia bushes, but the first noted feature is the barn-like two-car garage, with its faux stable rolling doors and hayloft hatchway. It sets a great tone for the historic Colonial flavor of this comparatively new 1963 construction.
A large overhanging entrance is balanced with two ornate overshaped windows on either side. The door is a hardwood, topped with a delicate glass design.
From the bottom up, this house is a medley of useful space and attractive design. The basement features some finished areas, including a gym with a wall of mirrors and tract lighting. There's also a laundry room, playrooms and storage.
The roomy foyer at the entrance is bright. To the left, a living room gets the inviting southern exposure on one side and offers an expanse of glass doors on the north end for lots more light. There's a fireplace with a brick hearth, lots of tract lights and hardwood flooring.
To the left -- making up the western side of the building -- is a playroom, with an arched raised wood ceiling, many windows and additional doors leading out to the backyard.
The dining room is appears circular, owing to the wall of bay windows on the north side. From here is a view of the patio and surrounding trees beyond the yard.
The kitchen has dark wood combining with black marble. A central island has a sink and all the chef's amenities, such as a six-burner Viking gas stove. There's a small eat-in area too, situated in a corner of inviting sunset-facing windows.
Through French doors is a family room at the north side, centered around a grand stone fireplace with a vaulted ceiling.
To the right of the main entrance is a study of dark wood with usable shelves on most of the walls, and southern exposure.
There's a bedroom at the top of the stairs that has its own bathroom. Two other bedrooms are on the east side of the house.
On the west side is the master suite, which has a bathroom done in unique, light brown polished granite and wood. The tub is under sash windows with a view out to the back. There's a large separate shower, too, and a walk-in closet.
Additional storage is available in the pull-down attic.
