Norwalk police arrest man with BB gun at shopping center

NORWALK — Police arrested a man with a BB gun following reports of an armed subject inside a busy Connecticut Avenue electronics store Tuesday afternoon.

The unidentified suspect was quickly taken into custody and officers secured the area in and around P.C. Richard & Son, which shares a shopping plaza with the newly opened Dick’s Sporting Goods store at 444 Connecticut Ave.

Lt. Terry Blake, a Norwalk police spokesman, said multiple 911 calls began coming in shortly after 1 p.m. reporting an armed man inside P.C. Richard & Son.

Within 20 minutes, police had secured the area and sent out a message via social media alerting the public that the situation was under control.

There was a heavy police presence at the Route 1 shopping center with several cruisers parked in front of the stores for over an hour.

Before leaving the scene at around 2 p.m. police were interviewing witnesses to determine what happened inside the shopping center.

Police have not identified the suspect, nor have they disclosed what charges we will face.

Witnesses reported seeing a person taken away in an ambulance. Police have not said officially if anyone was injured in the incident.

The Dick’s Sporting Goods store, formerly home to Sports Authority, opened in March.

P.C. Richard & Son opened on Connecticut Avenue in March 2009 following the liquidation and subsequent closure of Circuit City, which used to occupy that space.

Cedar Attanasio contributed reporting.
