Janet Rathert, of New Canaan, was named outstanding actress in Square One Theatre Company's Subscriber Awards.
The 19th annual awards were announced at a recent Readers Theatre Showcase event at the Stratford Library. The theater's more than 1,000 subscribers voted for performers in various acting categories from the company's three-play, 2013-14 season.
Rathert won for her role as a conflicted war photojournalist in Donald Margulies' play, "Time Stands Still."
A previous three-time nominee, this was Rathert's first win at Square One.
"Time Stands Still" tells the story of Sarah, a photographer, and James, a journalist, who have been together for nine years and share a passion for documenting the realities of war. But when injuries force them to return home to New York and their circle of friends, the adventurous couple confronts the prospect of a more conventional life.
The challenges facing Sarah, played by Rathert, and James, played by David Victor, seem clear enough. But a visit from their good friend and his new, much-younger girlfriend telegraphs just how markedly Sarah's sensibility differs from theirs.
The play explores the relationships between two different couples at a crucial juncture in each of their lives, when the desire to move forward clashes with the instinct to stay comfortably -- or even uncomfortably -- in place.
Rathert's Square One credits include "Black Tie," "Ancestral Voices," "The Mousetrap" and "The Right Kind of People." She also has appeared in "Mixed Couples" at the Westport Community Theatre and "Dancing at Lughnasa" at the Eastbound Theatre.
Square One begins its 25th anniversary season in November with Lee Blessing's modern classic, "A Walk in the Woods."
