New Canaan oboist wins top prize

Julia Marie DeRosa, of New Canaan, an oboist representing the Chautauqua, N.Y., Chapter, won the National Society of Arts and Letters first place prize of $10,000 in the Woodwind Competition.

Julia Marie DeRosa, of New Canaan, an oboist representing the Chautauqua, N.Y., Chapter, won the National Society of Arts and Letters first place prize of $10,000 in the Woodwind Competition.

DeRosa, 23, received her Bachelor of Music degree from Juilliard in 2013 and expects to complete her Master of Music from Juilliard in 2015.

DeRosa, a student of Elaine Douvas, the principal oboist of the Metropolitan Opera and chairman of the woodwinds department at Julliard, is the winner of the Peter Mennin Prize for Outstanding Achievement in Music.

The judges for the competition were Grant Cooper, artistic director and conductor of the West Virginia Symphony Orchestra and artistic director of Bach and Beyond Festival in Fredonia, N.Y.; Linda Strommen, oboist and professor of oboe at Indiana University; Robert Turizziani, clarinetist and music director of the River Cities Symphony, the West Virginia Youth Orchestra, and the Chicago Chamber Orchestra; and Carol Wincenc, flutist and teacher at Juilliard and Stony Brook University.
