New Canaan Public Schools received the 2014 Risk Management Achievement Award from the Connecticut Interlocal Risk Management Agency for its efforts in creating a district-wide school security program.
The program was done in collaboration with local public safety officials and CIRMA risk management consultants. In spring 2013, the group performed a risk assessment of all district buildings and grounds that formed the basis of an emergency action plan, implementation of best practices, and New Canaan-specific procedures that will help build a safer environment for students and staff.
Mary M. Kolek, schools superintendent, accepted the award on behalf of the schools at the May 16 event in Rocky Hill.
David Demchak, vice president of CIRMA, addressed the gathering of almost 100 municipal officials saying, "Our members' positive results extend beyond reduced losses; they help create risk-aware organizations that have a culture of accountability and sound decision-making processes. Their efforts create more efficient operations and ensure the delivery of vital public services."
The mission of CIRMA, a member-owned and governed organization, to reduce losses and costs by improving its members' understanding of risk and the ways to control and manage it. CIRMA's risk management achievement awards program was begun in 1981.
