Man carrying BB gun into store charged with breach of peace

NORWALK — A 72-year-old New Canaan man who apparently walked into the wrong store with a BB gun that resembled a rifle slung over his shoulder Tuesday has been charged with breach of peace.

Multiple Norwalk police units responded to P.C. Richard & Son at 444 Connecticut Ave. around 1 p.m. on a report of a man who had entered the store with a rifle propped on his shoulder.

Police said Wednesday the man, Douglas Wright, of Tallmadge Hill Road, was carrying a BB gun in need of repair. Rather than enter the adjacent Dick’s Sporting Goods store to inquire about repair, he mistakenly entered the appliance store, causing panic and calls to police.

Police said Wright asked a P.C. Richard & Son employee about fixing the gun to which the employee responded, “Are you looking for Dick’s?” Wright is said to have responded, “I thought this was Dick’s,” before exiting the store.

Prior to the arrival of police, the BB gun had been placed in the back of Wright’s car. He was quickly detained in the parking lot and the BB gun was seized.

Wright was charged with second-degree breach of peace. He was released on a promise to appear and given a court date of Oct. 30.
