The Grimes Scholar program is a year-long reading program conducted by the Children's Room that challenges avid readers to read books from the Karen Grimes Collection of Classic Children's Books. The program has two levels. Junior Grimes Scholars read all 187 picture books and the Grimes Scholars read 50 chapter books from the collection.

The collection was created in memory of Karen Grimes in 2000.

The celebration included the awarding of medals for reaching the program goals. Storyteller Rona Leventhal followed, telling interactive stories to the guests.

Children age 5 to grade 3 participated in the Junior Grimes Scholar Challenge. Medals were awarded to Delia Bakal, James Bakal, Bennett Bognon, Cooper Colthup, Camryn Lee, Lauryn Lee, Lexi Levene, Arjun Patel, Arushi Patel, Emma Salvatore, Kailee See and Siddhi Singhania.

Students in grades 4 to 6 received the Grimes Scholar Medals. They were Avery Baumel, Catherine Burges, Cooper Colthup, Charles Corcoran, Jordyn Lee, Katherine Mintchev, Avery Morawa, Peter Cece, Christopher See and Lauren Young.

The 2014 program is now online. Booklets with titles for each level are available for pick up at the Children's Information Desk. Children interested in participating in the 2014 Grimes Scholar Reading Challenge are invited to enroll online at www.newcanaanlibrary.org/kids.
