Letter: Preservation alliance wants to protect Ferris Hill property

The New Canaan Preservation Alliance wishes to express its concern for the structure located at 8 Ferris Hill, New Canaan. Based upon information from the New Canaan Historical Society and the Connecticut Trust's circuit rider, Wes Haynes, the house, with its undisturbed surrounding grounds, is one of the oldest structures in our town and one of the best preserved examples of our town's earliest history.

Already there has been much community concern regarding the fate of this landmark structure, since the legal notice appeared that the site would be developed. The contract purchaser, Mr. Max Abel, is to be commended for his acknowledgement of the significance of this property, which has been a home for some of our earliest and most historically significant families. It is our understanding that Mr. Abel has taken measures to inquire as to the historic nature of the house and submitted a request to the Planning and Zoning Commission for a special permit to allow this historic house to remain on the same site as a new house.

His proposed site plan, to be presented to the Planning and Zoning Commission at a public hearing on Jan. 28, would allow the existing structure to remain, and it is a step in the right direction and should serve as an example to other owners of historic properties in our town.

We ask that any decision made by the commission in this matter take into consideration the historic importance of this structure and that any ruling by the commission on this site plan application require that this historic house be maintained in situ and in perpetuity, noted in the New Canaan land records, preserving to the greatest extent possible its historic fabric which has been so well preserved. We also support the professional recommendation by Mr. Haynes that a nomination to the state and national registers for this most significant town landmark be prepared.
