In-demand area close to downtown to get sidewalks

NEW CANAAN — Three roads often used by pedestrians to the southwest of downtown will be the recipients of new sidewalks.

“These are the three we’ve been highlighting for a while,” said Director of Public Works Tiger Mann at an Aug. 5 special meeting of the Board of Selectmen.

Concrete sidewalks and granite curbs will be built along Richmond Hill Road, from the existing sidewalk to Park Street, on Grove Street, from the existing sidewalk to Richmond Hill Road, and on Mead Street, from the existing sidewalk to Park Street.

“It’s a terrific area of town,” said First Selectman Robert Mallozzi III.

The $289,159 project — to come out of this year’s Department of Public Works budget — was approved unanimously by the selectmen.

“It’s so good,” said Selectman Beth Jones. “That lack of sidewalks — there are always people pushing strollers in the street and running. It’s, I think, the greatest need for sidewalk is that area.”
