New Canaan resident Steve Johnson will address the Senior Men's Club of New Canaan in Morrill Hall at St. Mark's Church at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 7, about his recent trip and provide insights into current life in Ethiopia.
After graduating from Marist College, Johnson served in the Peace Corps in Ethiopia from 1969 to 1971 as a teacher and was posted to two towns in the Ethiopian highlands.
He retired in 2010 following a 37-year sales career with Xerox Corporation, MCI Telecommunications, and Verizon.
In November 2013, he returned to Ethiopia to participate in the Ethiopian Sustainable Food Project begun eight years ago by two former Peace Corps volunteers with whom he served. The goal of the project is to promote the expanded cultivation and distribution of potatoes, both as a source of food as well as income. On that trip, he also traveled to the west of Ethiopia to visit the child he and his wife, Sharon, support through Save the Children.
