Fire burns cottage in New Canaan

A caretaker's cottage at 301 Michigan Road was damaged in a fire Wednesday night.

The New Canaan Fire Department received a call at 8:33 p.m. reporting a structure fire with a possible occupant.

When the first units arrived, they found the cottage "fully involved in fire," Fire Marshal Fred Baker said in a press release.

"Given the remote location fire fighters had to rely on tankers for water supply," Baker said in the release.

The fire was extinguished at 9:03 p.m., but the cottage "was a total loss," Baker said Thursday afternoon. There were no reported injuries, despite initial reports of a possible occupant, according to the release.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but Baker told the New Canaan News a candle may have been left burning inside the cottage.

Fire departments from Pound Ridge, N.Y., South Salem, N.Y., Wilton, Norwalk and Stamford assisted with the incident. New Canaan EMS also responded and stayed at the scene as part of standard structure fire protocol.
