The Board of Education appointed itself as the search committee for a new superintendent on March 17, a week after Mary Kolek announced she will retire from the position at the end of the school year.
"Given the fact that the Board of Education would like a superintendent in place by July 1, 2014, the Committee has decided to name an interim superintendent. The Committee is now in the process of identifying a candidate to fill the position," Hobbs wrote.
Kolek, who replaced Superintendent David Abbey in July 2012, is moving to North Carolina, where her family lives.
Five of the current Board of Education members were on the search committee that helped select Kolek two years ago, according to Hobbs. During that search process, the board surveyed the community to find out what personal and professional qualities residents would like to see in a superintendent. Hobbs said more than 700 people responded and that information is available for the new search committee to review.
